Nagarjuna Besha

Lord Jagannath and his siblings decorated in different attires in different occasions. But during Kartik Month few majaor attires are listed in detailed manner out of 32 beshas/attires undertaken in Jagannath Temple.

Radhadamodar or Raidamodar Besha:

Ashwina Sukla Ekadashi to Kartik Sukla Dashmi- for one month after Vijaya Dashmi, i.e, from September-October, this Besha is observed. ‘Rai ‘ refers to Radha and ‘Damodar’ to Sri Krishna, hence this is the beautiful VeshaofJagannath in which he is worshiped with Sri Radha, with prior consent ofmother Laxmi. After arati and Abakasha in the early morning at about 4 A.M. the deities are decorated in Radhadamodar Vesha and thereafter Gopalballav bhog is offered to them. Sri Balabhadra and Jagannath wear trikaccha, barlagi pat saree, phoota and srikapadas. Their hands are decorated with golden nilabhuja, a nice chula fixed over the trimundi and a chandrika on the top ofthe chula. Series of gold ornaments are for this Besha. In the month of Kartika/October-November, thousands of devotees avail the opportunity of this darshan in the early morning.

Radhadamodar or Raidamodar Besha

Thiakia or Laxmi Narayan Besha:

Kartika Sukla Ekadasi- 11thday of bright fortnight of the month of Kartik October-November, this Besha is observed. This is otherwise called as Laxmi Narayan Besha. After morning arati and Abakasha deities are decorated as Laxmi Narayan and this Vesha continues till Bhogamandop. 23 varieties ofomaments are used. Sribhuja with sankha; chakra; hal; mushale.t.c.and golden kirit with sweet scented Kia flower thereon; increase the decency of this Vesha.

Thiakia or Laxmi Narayan Besha

Bankachuda Besha:

Kartik Sukla Dwadashi- 12th day of bright fortnight of the month of Kartik/October-November, Sri Jagannath and Balabhadra are decorated with their ‘ehula’ bent towards right side and a golden Kia flower fixed on it. When Akrura on advice of Kansa, came to take away Ram and Krishna from Gopbpur to Mathura, he saw both of them in this Besha.

Bankachuda Besha

Adikia Besha:

Kartik Sukla Trayodashi, 13th day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartik/October-November, this Besha is observed. Kia is a beautiful flower with decent smell; it is the most favorite flower of Sri Jagannath. Along with gold ornaments, hala, mushal, sankha, chakra are set, paper sola made flower decorations are made, the special attraction of the Besha is that Kia flowers are fixed on the top of the chulas of the principal deities on Ratnasimhasan. This is also termed as Tribikrama Besha.

Adikia Besha

Dalikia Besha:

Kartik Sukla Chaturdashi, 14th day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartik/October-November, this Besha is observed. This is otherwise known as the Laxmi Narasimha Besha. The Besha is almost similar to Adikia Besha, but the only difference is that sribhuj and sripayar are fixed with the deities.

Nagarjuna Besha:

The year in which Kartik Sukla Dwadashi to Kartik Sukla Chaturdashi counts for 6 days, instead ofnormal 5 days, by addition ofa leap day, this Besha is done on the extra (mala) day. The last Nagarjuna vesha was observed during 1994. ( 16.11.1994) There is no mention ofthis Vesha in the Record of Rights of Jagannath temple. Some Researchers state that Naga-like-armed BrahmarshiParasuram killed a khyatriya king named Sahasrarjun or Kirtibirya, in memory of the same Jagannath is exhibited as Parasuram in NagarjunBesha. In this Besha Jagannath and Balabhadra are dressed like Nagas, i.e. warriors. The items used in this Besha are – cane-made-handia, dhala, moustache, beard, knife, chopper, tiger skin, gold sribhuja, sripayar, garland made of tiger nails, conch shell, chakra, hala and mushal etc. This Besha is unique and the gathering at Puri for darshan ofthis Besha has been recorded as the highest.

Nagarjuna Besha

Raja Rajarajeswar Besha:

On Kartik Purnami, the full moon day of Kartik/October-November, after Abakasha, the Besha starts andcontinues till Sahanmela after Bhogmandop. The deities are decorated like kings; 23 varieties of gold ornaments are utilized for this Besha.
