JAGANNATH TEMPLE – The Abode of Lord Jagannath

The temple dates back to 12th century and was built by the king of Ganga Dynasty Anantavarman Chodaganga . The temple is very sacred to the Hindus but is of more to the people who follow Vaishnava Traditions.

In general, there are three gods which are worshipped there namely Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra.  The deities are adorned with different clothes and jewels in different seasons.

The temple covers an area of almost 400,000 sq. Feet and is surrounded by a 20feet high wall known as “Meghananda Pacheri”. It has almost 120 temples inside it as the main temple is surrounded by a wall known as “Kurma Bedha”.  With its rich sculptural and odia styles architecture this temple is considered as one of the most significant temple in India.

The temple’s kitchen is the largest kitchen in the world. Goddess Mahalakshmi is the empress of SRIMANDIR herself.

The cooks working in the kitchen believes that if the shadow of a dog appears near the kitchen temple it is regarded as the sign of her displeasure and then the whole food is buried and a new batch is made.

Rath Yatra or the Chariot festival is the most important festival and is attended by millions of people from all over the world. The chariot or Rath of Lord Jagannath is approximately 45feet high and 35feet square.   The Rath is pulled by the devotes for 3km in the main Puri Road.

How to Reach:

By Air- Biju Patnaik International Airport is the nearest way of transport by air.

By Road- Puri is well connected with neighbouring cities through roads.

By Rail- Puri is a major railway station and has trains running on a daily basis from different parts of towns and cities.
