LINGARAJ TEMPLE – The Abode of Lord Shiva

There are many stories about the origin and deity of Lingaraj Temple. But the most believed one is. A fascinating  mythological tale in which: Goddess Parvati was once told by Lord Shiva that why he loved the city Bhubaneshwar over Varanasi. And in order  to explore that she made herself look as a cattle women  and went out. But on the way she met two demons named Kritti and Vasa who wanted to marry her. She refused and on her refusal they continued to pursue her against her will. In the process of protecting herself she destroyed both of them. And at that time Lord Shiva descended and formed the Bindu Sarobar Lake and resided there for forever.

Every year there are several festivals which are celebrated in the temple which add more charm and grace to it’s existing beauty.

As this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva the most famous festival here is SHIVRATRI which is celebrated every year in the Phalgun month. Thousands of devotes come here with their offerings and prayers.

On an average basis there are over 6000 visitors daily and over 2,00,000 on the auspicious month of Shivratri.

SOME TIPS TO REMEMBER-

1) Non-Hindus are not allowed  in the temple.

2) Shoes must be removed before entering.

3) Photography is strictly prohibited.

4) Stay away from people who offers puja, except the preist.

How to Reach

Local busses and taxis are easily available from Bhubaneshwar Bus Stand, Railway Station, an from Airport you have to hire Taxi, Ola, Uber & other local Taxis are available like Dial A Taxi, Oricab, GoTaxi, Bhubaneswar Taxi .
